Democratic gubernatorial candidate Steve Fulop today released his plan to make K-12 school funding more equitable, address issues affecting New Jersey’s higher education system, and provide better mental health services for children.
This is the Jersey City mayor’s fifth major policy initiative as part of his #FixNJ agenda.
His plan includes: “instituting a 2% cap on annual state college tuition increases; lifting income limits on 529 College Savings Plans to reflect the state’s cost of living; significantly increasing the state’s investment in community colleges; reforming the Tuition Assistance Grant program to redirect more funds to institutions that primarily serve students with higher financial needs; updating the School Funding Reform Act to ensure transparency and accountability; confronting school segregation head on with a multifaceted approach designed to make schools more diverse; encouraging more consolidation of the state’s smallest school districts and shared services to lower costs; and streamlining resources for student mental health services.”
“The promise that our children will receive an excellent public education is one of the primary reasons why so many people choose to live here in New Jersey, and while Governor Murphy and the State Legislature have made major progress on increasing school funding there are clear areas for reform to ensure that funding decisions are made in an open, transparent and equitable manner that does not allow politics into the process,” said Fulop. “Our #FixNJ Education Plan builds on that success while also addressing the critical issue of school segregation, making systematic changes to the state university system to ensure greater affordability, increasing access to student mental health services and much more.”
